1. Where can I find the mooring permit application and instructions?

2. What's the process for new mooring requests?

3. What's the process for mooring renewals?

If an applicant wants to renew a previously approved mooring, the applicant must submit an application with the application fee, current proof of registration, current proof of insurance, and proof of a tri-annual mooring inspection. Once the GHMC has reviewed the application for completeness, a mooring permit can be issued.

4. Can I submit an application if I don’t own a boat yet?

Yes, the GHMC suggests you submit an application early in preparation for your boat arrival. The process of obtaining a new mooring could take anywhere from one week to a few months depending on the season and availability. Keep in mind information such as boat length, draft, and harbor preference is needed to assign a mooring location and that a mooring permit will not be issued until proof of registration, insurance, and mooring inspection is submitted to the GHMC.

5. What do mooring vendors do and do I really need one?

Mooring vendors can service, repair, and inspect moorings. Moorings inspections are required every three years, so the boater is required to use a qualified vendor. The qualified vendors list can be found here. 

6. What is a mooring inspection entail?

A mooring inspection includes lifting the mooring tackle out of the water and replacing the tackle as needed.

7. Can I service my own mooring?

Yes, for those who are do-it-yourselfers, you can commission and decommission your mooring (removing winter gear and installing seasonal gear). Servicing is different than inspecting. You cannot inspect your own tackle.

8. What is a winter stick?

Winter sticks are used to mark/identify a boat's mooring during the winter season. Mooring vendors can switch seasonal gear for the boater. Please remember that wooden sticks are strictly prohibited.

It is recommended that only the commercially available ‘Winter Sticks’ be utilized. They should be white with a blue reflective stripe and have a minimum height of 4’ above the water level. 

9. Can I dive and inspect my own mooring or have a friend do it for my tri-annual mooring inspection?

No, diving is not permitted for a tri-annual inspection, all moorings must be lifted and inspected by an approved vendor. A copy of their inspection report must be sent to the GHMC and will be filed accordingly.

10. What if I don’t need my mooring any longer?

Please inform the GHMC and your mooring vendor that you will no longer be using your mooring. Removal of mooring tackle is the responsibility of the mooring owner. The HMC maintains a list of mooring holders looking to sell their tackle. Please remember mooring locations cannot be sold, only tackle may be sold.

11. What if I want to keep my mooring while I don’t have a boat?

The GHMC understands that an applicant might be in between buying boats and wants to keep their mooring location. An applicant can keep their mooring as long as the mooring continues to be serviced. The applicant is required to submit an application stating the approximate length of time they will be without a boat, the proof of a tri-annual inspection, and the application fee.
