PROCLAMATION from Fred Camillo, First Selectman
WHEREAS, The Soka Gakkai International (SGI)--an organization devoted to peace, culture and education--was founded on January 26, 1975; and
WHEREAS, SGI members seek to contribute to the health and advancement of our local communities—Greenwich and Stamford—in a wide range of endeavors with an aim to construct bridges of peace through cultural exchange and dialogue; and
WHEREAS, The SGI members in Greenwich comprise a diverse, vibrant and engaged Buddhist community; and our local SGI membership has enjoyed steady growth over the years, currently comprising one chapter of five districts with over 350 members in the Greenwich-Stamford area; and
WHEREAS, Each SGI member seeks to live by this motto from Daisaku Ikeda, the SGI President: "A great human revolution in just a single individual will help achieve a change in the destiny of a nation and, further, will enable a change in the destiny of all humankind”; and
WHEREAS, Worldwide, there are now over 12 million SGI members in 192 countries and territories, and the SGI has developed into an international movement of global citizens striving, on a daily basis, for the genuine happiness and true prosperity of their respective countries and local communities.
NOW, THEREFORE, l, Fred Camillo, FIRST SELECTMAN OF THE TOWN OF GREENWICH, do
hereby proclaim Tuesday, January 26, 2021 as
Founding Day of the Soka Gakkai International
