[ARCHIVED] Storm to Bring Strong Winds and Heavy Rain

PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Thursday, December 24, 2020

There is a high wind warning in effect from 6 o’clock tonight until 10 a.m. Christmas Day with damaging winds blowing at 30 to 4 mph and gusts of up to 65 mph. The winds are expected to damage or down trees, limbs and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially high profile vehicles.

The Town has public safety, public works and parks crews on standby as does Eversource. All downed power lines should be considered live and avoided.

Please take steps to check your property and clear areas so that water can freely flow away from your home and please take a moment to dig out any storm water basins on one’s property open, checking gutters and the like can all help.

Please remember that storm water must not be pumped into the Town’s sanitary sewer system – do not direct sump pumps to the sanitary sewer.  In addition to being illegal, such activity can overwhelm the sanitary sewer and lead to overflows.

The Department of Public Works worked throughout the Town’s roadway network to do the best that staff can to have it ready for this storm.  However, intermittent flooding or ponding of water may occur with this storm, so please exercise caution when driving.  When you come upon standing water in the road, don’t drown, turn around!

Give anyone you see out working as a result of the weather a thumbs up if you can do so safely – they are out there trying to help those of us fortunate enough to remain at home during these challenging times!
