[ARCHIVED] November 2020 designated Greenwich Alliance for Education's Turkey Trot Fitness Challenge Month

PROCLAMATION from Fred Camillo, First Selectman 

WHEREAS, Since 2006, the Greenwich Alliance for Education’s has served Greenwich Public Schools by funding innovation, expanding opportunities and inspiring educators; and

WHEREAS, Its fundraising has supported thousands of Greenwich Public School students through its “Reaching Out Grants” awarded to pilot innovative programs in our schools; “Tuning In To Music,” free instrumental music lessons for students unable to afford this opportunity; “AVID SUCCESS,” extensions to help AVID students and Alumni achieve college and career success, “Greenwich Alliance Scholarship Fund” for AVID students in college; and Early Childhood Education through the “Greenwich United Way’s Direct Impact program – Early Childhood Achievement Gap Solutions”; and

WHEREASCOVID-related concerns have caused the Alliance to reimagine its annual Turkey Trot 5K Run, the organization’s largest annual fundraiser and the largest community event of the Thanksgiving weekend, as a month-long Fitness Challenge for its 10th anniversary in 2020; and

WHEREAS, As in past, the Turkey Trot will engage the entire Greenwich community – residents, schools and businesses – with myriad local businesses as sponsors, GPS elementary school physical fitness programs as participants and the Developing Artist grant champions as creators of “Funky Turkey” sculptures; and

WHEREAS, The month-long Fitness Challenge will continue to promote fitness, exercise and wellness by encouraging participants to log miles by running, walking or biking wearing the Turkey Trot t-shirt and posting photos to win prizes; and with a $500 gift certificate for physical education equipment to the Greenwich school with the highest number of participants; and

WHEREASLocal commerce also will be encouraged and promoted through fun appearances by its “Tom the Turkey” mascot at sponsors’ business locations and select local restaurants donating a percentage of sale to support the Turkey Trot.

NOW, THEREFORE, l, Fred Camillo, FIRST SELECTMAN OF THE TOWN OF GREENWICH, do
hereby proclaim November 2020 as
Greenwich Alliance For Education's Turkey Trot Fitness Challenge Month
