[ARCHIVED] Legal vs Illegal Fireworks in Connecticut

Illegal Fireworks in CT

The Greenwich Police Department wishes everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July. Below is a quick guide to help you have fun while also being safe this holiday weekend.

Fireworks are Illegal in Connecticut unless you are licensed to possess them.

Fireworks are devices that fly or explode, including firecrackers, skyrockets, bottle rockets, roman candles, and devices containing any explosive or flammable compounds.  These are all illegal in Connecticut.

Only Sparklers and Fountains are legal in Connecticut; however, these cannot be sold or used by anyone younger than 16.

Sparklers mean a wire or stick coated with pyrotechnic composition that produces a shower of sparks upon ignition. Fountain means any cardboard or heavy paper cone or cylindrical tube containing a pyrotechnic mixture that upon ignition produces a shower of colored sparks or smoke. A Fountain includes but is not limited to, a spike fountain, a base made of wood or plastic for placing on the ground, or a handle fountain, which is a handheld device with a wooden or cardboard handle.

Novelties and trick noisemakers such as smoke bombs, party poppers, and snappers, and the "snake," are banned in Connecticut. Sky Lanterns are also prohibited.
