At its core, the Greenwich Police Department is focused on protecting life and property, preserving the rights of every person, ensuring public peace and contributing to improving the quality of life for the benefit of the entire community. We share with the Nation feelings of outrage at brutal acts committed by police officers. These acts are wholly incompatible with our vision of Greenwich Police as guardians and protectors of the public.
The Greenwich Police Department recognizes that there are concerns about the current state of policing in our State and across the Nation. We unequivocally believe that the preservation of life is our sacred obligation and we adhere to the principal that we are protectors of our community and the rights of each and every person. We recognize that many in the public are seeking changes in the way policing is conducted.
The Greenwich Police Department is always looking to have discussions on how we can improve. We have prepared the document How We Police and Engage with Our Community to inform our stakeholders on proactive measures this Department has already instituted in the areas of embedding Constitutional Policing in our operations, building the best police force possible, community engagement, reducing racial profiling and minimizing the use of force.
We will continue to seek out conversation with our community, others in the law enforcement profession and our legislative representatives in order to develop positive changes that reinforce our commitment to protecting everyone in the community. We strive to always be worthy of the great trust emplaced in us by the public we serve.
Sincerely,
James J. Heavey
Chief of Police
