PROCLAMATION from Fred Camillo, First Selectman
WHEREAS, After serving the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, in May 1969 at the age of 35, William ‘Bill’ Thompson joined the East Port Chester Fire Department as a probationary fireman; and
WHEREAS, After one year of service, Bill became a First Class Fireman on May 6, 1970; and
WHEREAS, His service included Department Trustee from 1971 to 1973; Secretary in 1982 and again in 1998; Financial Secretary in 1989 and 1990; and Treasurer in 1993; and
WHEREAS, Bill also served as Vice President in 1985; president in 1983, 1984, 1987, 1991, 1999 and 2000; and was the first Chairman of the Board of Directors; and
WHEREAS, Bill has held several line officers positions including 2nd Lieutenant in 1974; 1st Lieutenant in 1975; Captain in 1976; 2nd Assistant Chief in 1977; 1st Assistant Chief in 1978 and Chief in 1980; and
WHEREAS, Bill was one of the first firemen to respond to the Gulliver’s night club fire on June 30, 1974 and assisted in rescue operations before manning hose lines for many hours; and
WHEREAS, Bill also served as chairman of committee responsible for overseeing the relocation and construction of the Firemen’s Memorial from Byram Park to its current location in front of the Byram Fire Department.
NOW, THEREFORE, l, Fred Camillo, FIRST SELECTMAN OF THE TOWN OF GREENWICH, do
hereby proclaim Sunday, March 8, 2020 as
William ’Bill’ Thompson Day
in the Town of Greenwich and encourage all our citizens to join me in applauding his many years of dedication and service to the Town and in wishing him many more years of health and happiness.
