January designated as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

PROCLAMATION from Fred Camillo, First Selectman 

WHEREAS, Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women; and

WHEREAS, Each year, more than 500,000 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer, and more than 250,000 women will die worldwide; and

WHEREAS, In the United States, more than 13,000 women will be diagnosed and 4,000 women will die each year; and

WHEREAS, Cervical cancer is almost always preventable through Pap smears and the HPV vaccination; and

WHEREAS, HPV, the virus that causes 90% of cervical cancers and five other types of cancer, can be eliminated through vaccination of both boys and girls at the recommended ages; and

WHEREAS, January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and the Greenwich
community is committed to educating the public about this disease.

hereby proclaim January 2020 as
Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

in the Town of Greenwich to help raise awareness of cervical cancer and encourage our residents to recognize the impact of cervical cancer on families within our community and honor the women in our community whose lives are currently impacted and whose lives have been shortened by this disease.
