PROCLAMATION from Peter J. Tesei, First Selectman
WHEREAS, Despina K. Fassuliotis was born in Englewood, N.J., and raised in the Bronx, N.Y., where she graduated from Walton High School in 1946; and
WHEREAS, Despina graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English from Brooklyn College in 1950, the first in her family to graduate college; and
WHEREAS, During her college years Despina worked for the New York World Telegram and Sun and was featured in many newspaper fashion advertisements in that newspaper; and
WHEREAS, Despina married William (Bill) Fassuliotis on September 7, 1952; became a New York City school teacher and taught English and Language Arts in the South Bronx; and
WHEREAS, Despina and Bill built their house and moved their family to Greenwich in 1966; where they raised their four children, Karen Fassuliotis, Constance T. Fassuliotis, George W. Fassuliotis and Barbara F. Rogers while continuing her teaching career, eventually retiring after 32 years of service; and
WHEREAS, In retirement Despina became a member of the Greenwich Representative Town Meeting (RTM) in District 11 in January 1999 and was reelected to nine more terms having served on the Education, Health and Human Services, Transportation committees and the RTM Moderator's Special Rules Committee; as District 11 Chair for six years; and chaired the RTM's 75th anniversary celebration in 2008; and
WHEREAS, Despina is retiring from the RTM after the completion of her term in 2019.
NOW, THEREFORE, l, PETER J. TESEI, FIRST SELECTMAN OF THE TOWN OF GREENWICH, do
hereby proclaim Friday, November 29, 2019 as Despina K. Fassuliotis Day
in the Town of Greenwich and urge all our citizens to join me in applauding Ms. Fassuliotis' service to the Town and in wishing her many more years of health and happiness.
