[ARCHIVED] Subject Arrested for Home Invasion in Byram

On 10-14-2023 at approximately 10:31pm, members of the Greenwich Police Department were dispatched to the area of Mill Street and Henry Street on a report of a male (later identified as Edwin Gutierrez-Vasco 11/03/1971, LKA 225 Mill Street) stabbing at and damaging vehicles with a knife that were parked on the side of the street. While officers were enroute, dispatch advised that the information received via 911 was not clear due to a language barrier, and that there may be a stabbing victim in the area.

Upon arrival in the area, GPD units observed several vehicles with fresh damage to their windshields. Officers were then told that Gutierrez-Vasco knife had just forced his way into an apartment building at 225 Mill Street by breaking the glass on the front door.

Gutierrez-Vasco is reported to have then ascended a staircase to the second floor, where he forced his way into an apartment by breaking through the door. He entered the apartment brandishing the large knife and attempted to stab the occupants. At that time, there were multiple people in the apartment (including three (3) children). A male resident from the apartment came out from the bedroom and confronted Gutierrez-Vasco who was swinging the large knife and yelling that he was going to kill the male and his mother. The victim picked up a baby gate and was able to defend himself and the children against Gutierrez-Vasco's stab attempts. After several stab attempts the male victim was able to convince Gutierrez-Vasco to drop the knife.

GPD officers arrived at the apartment and observed Gutierrez-Vasco seated in a chair with the male victim standing next to him. Gutierrez-Vasco was bleeding from his hand and was holding a towel to control the bleeding. Officers attempted to place Gutierrez-Vasco under arrest and Gutierrez-Vasco began to actively resist by lunging at an officer. Several officers struggled to gain control of Gutierrez-Vasco but subsequently were able to place him in handcuffs without any injuries. Gutierrez-Vasco made threats to harm himself and continued to thrash around uncontrollably while handcuffed on the ground. Medics were detailed to the scene. Gutierrez-Vasco was then transported to Greenwich Hospital, accompanied by officers.

The investigation revealed this was an isolated incident. Gutierrez-Vasco knew victims and targeted thier vehicles and residence.  There was no immediate threat to the public. Gutierrez-Vasco was the only subject sustaining an injury due to him breaking the glass door with his hand. Gutierrez-Vasco was treated and released Greenwich Hospital.  Gutierrez-Vasco was charged with the following Connecticut General Statutes:

  • CGS 53a-100aaa - Home Invasion
  • CGS 53a-101 - Burglary First Degree
  • CGS 53a-49 (53a-59) - Criminal Attempt at Assualt First Degree
  • CGS 53-21 - Risk of Injury to a Minor (3 counts)
  • CGS 53a-61aa - Threatening

  • CGS 53a-116 - Criminal Mischief Second Degree (3 counts)
  • CGS 53a182 & 53a-182 - Breach of Peace and Disorderly Conduct

Gutierrez-Vasco's court date was set for 10-30-2023.  He was unable to post a $500,000 bond and will be held at GPD and later transported to Stamford Superior Court.
