October 1 designated as Chief Herbie Bocchino Day

PROCLAMATION from Fred Camillo, First Selectman 

WHEREAS, Herbert “Herbie” Bocchino began his firefighting career in 1979 as a volunteer at East Port Chester and joined Washington Engine & Hose in 2001, holding numerous committee and fire officer positions as well as many certifications recognized by the State; and

WHEREAS, During his firefighting career with the Port Chester Fire Department he served as the Second Assistant Chief from 2017 to 2018, First Assistant Chief from 2019 to 2020, and Chief of the Department from 2021 to 2022, leading the department through multiple large-scale incidents during the COVID pandemic; and

WHEREASDuring his time as Chief, Herbie upgraded the Department’s outdated technology and implemented the use of the Incident Command System for all incidents in the department, which continues to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Port Chester Fire Department; and

WHEREAS, Herbie successfully procured the purchase of a new Engine to replace Port Chester’s Engine 64, purchased water rescue suits and equipment for the entire department to allow members to enter flood waters safely and improved response services to the citizens during drastic times; and

WHEREAS, During his tenure, Herbie strengthened partnerships with mutual aid departments and mended relationships with neighboring departments while increasing department training efforts by including the Rye Brook Fire Department in all department training sessions; and

WHEREAS, After 20 years proudly serving in the US Navy and more than 44 years in the fire service, Herbie has returned to Washington Engine & Hose as an interior firefighter and Deputy Chief of the Department. He will continue to maintain his more than 30-year service in the field of telecommunications where he holds the position of Operations Manager with plans to spend more time with his family, especially his wife Elaine, his two children Herb and Jessica and six grandchildren.

NOW, THEREFORE, l, Fred Camillo, FIRST SELECTMAN OF THE TOWN OF GREENWICH, do
hereby proclaim October 1, 2023 as
 Chief Herbie Bocchino Day


in the Town of Greenwich and urge all citizens to join me in celebrating and in recognizing Chief Bocchino’s contributions to the Village of Port Chester and partnership with the Town of Greenwich and in wishing him well in his future endeavors.
