PROCLAMATION from Fred Camillo, First Selectman
WHEREAS, For more than 70 years, Abilis has been providing employment and job training for individuals with disabilities in our community; and
WHEREAS, Abilis has placed more than 500 individuals with disabilities in community jobs in Greenwich and throughout Fairfield County; and
WHEREAS, Abilis is a non-profit 501(c)3 that provides services and support for more than 800 people with disabilities throughout Fairfield County and is intertwined in the communities it serves, including Greenwich; and
WHEREAS, For the past three years the Town of Greenwich has enjoyed a special partnership between Greenwich Library and Abilis to run The Café at Greenwich Library, which has provided employment for more than 35 individuals, providing them with job training, customer service and food service skills and resulting in self-confidence, self-worth and ensuring inclusion that they might not be able to get elsewhere; and
WHEREAS, All businesses should consider the inclusiveness of their workforce and explore opportunities to employ those of all abilities and benefit from the positive impact of disability inclusion; and
WHEREAS, This special partnership between the Greenwich Library and Abilis has led to an expansion of Abilis’ businesses and job training platforms with other organizations, providing opportunities for those with disabilities to live and work in the community of their choice. The Town of Greenwich is thankful for the partnership between Greenwich Library and Abilis and recognizes the doors of opportunity that have now been opened for our community members.
NOW, THEREFORE, l, Fred Camillo, FIRST SELECTMAN OF THE TOWN OF GREENWICH, do
hereby proclaim October 2023 as
National Disabilities Employment Awareness Month
