PROCLAMATION from Fred Camillo, First Selectman
WHEREAS, The GREATS, Inc., which is more formally known as The Greenwich Retirees Eating and Tarrying Society, was founded Oct. 15, 1973 by Fr. Martin Hitchcock of St. Mary Church and Charles Henninger of the Greenwich Department of Parks and Recreation to establish a Senior Center and, obtain a federal grant for the first year's expenses; and
WHEREAS, The Senior Center was originally known as the GREATS and operated under that name until 1982 when it moved to its current home at 299 Greenwich Avenue and was officially renamed the Greenwich Senior Center; and
WHEREAS, In 1988 the GREATS Board was officially incorporated to accept and manage a monetary legacy left to the Senior Center to be used specifically for entertainment, refreshments, programs and gifts to benefit members of the Senior Center as well as to provide feedback and recommendations to the Senior Center Staff on programs and other matters; and
WHEREAS, The GREATS Board of Directors continues today as a separate and distinct entity while still performing its original mandate in an advisory capacity to the Senior Center staff by managing funds bequeathed to the GREATS for the benefit of members of the Greenwich Senior Center; and
WHEREAS, The GREATS is celebrating its 50th Anniversary on October 15, 2023 and is looking forward to assisting in serving the needs of members of the Greenwich Senior Center for at least another 50 years.
NOW, THEREFORE, l, Fred Camillo, FIRST SELECTMAN OF THE TOWN OF GREENWICH, do
hereby proclaim October 11, 2023 as
The GREATS Day
in the Town of Greenwich and urge all residents to join me in celebrating and recognizing the Greenwich Retirees Eating and Tarrying Society’s contributions to our Town.
