PROCLAMATION from Fred Camillo, First Selectman
WHEREAS, Mrs. Winona Mullis was born in western Pennsylvania and was a graduate of Johnstown’s Central High School; and
WHEREAS, She then spent a year at Indiana State Teachers College before she volunteered with the Navy in 1943 and trained as a codebreaker at IBM, making her one of the first WAVES, which stands for Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Mullis became a Specialist I and was assigned to a group of women trained in programming, tabulation and other skills useful for the war effort; and
WHEREAS, Once World War II was won, Mrs. Mullis completed her bachelor’s degree before working for 39 years as a teacher; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Mullis moved to Greenwich close to 22 years ago to be closer to her daughter, an anesthesiologist at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City; and
WHEREAS, Even after her official retirement, Mrs. Mullis didn’t stray too far from the classroom and spent many years teaching English as a second language while also tutoring from home and at the Greenwich Senior Center. She also volunteered her time as a member of the Representative Town Meeting for a decade and tabulated absentee ballots for the Registrar of Voters; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Mullis has remained active in Senior Center leadership as a GREATS Board Member and as a volunteer at church blood drives at her church and is celebrating her milestone 100th birthday.
NOW, THEREFORE, l, Fred Camillo, FIRST SELECTMAN OF THE TOWN OF GREENWICH, do
hereby proclaim August 31, 2023 as
Winona Mullis Day
in the Town of Greenwich and urge all residents to wish our beloved Winona Mullis a very Happy Birthday and celebrate her service to our Town and to our country.
