PROCLAMATION from Fred Camillo, First Selectman
WHEREAS, Edward Schachter was born on September 10, 1923 to Rose and Leo Schachter in Cologne, Germany; and
WHEREAS, He came to the United States on New Year's Eve 1938, arriving at Ellis Island and then lived in Washington Heights in New York City where he attended George Washington High School; and
WHEREAS, Edward enlisted in the Army in March 1944 where he was a MP and an interpreter, teaching prisoners of war about democracy before being honorably discharged in 1946; and
WHEREAS, He came to Greenwich in 1956, opening the iconic Richard's on Greenwich Avenue, and as the store became successful and moved to bigger locations on the Avenue, he remained as he always was, devoted to his staff and especially to his customers, while providing many Greenwich High School students their first work experience; and
WHEREAS, Edward was named Rotary Man of the Year in 1999, for all his dedication to the community and, as the proprietor of Richard's, he was a true believer in supporting the community and giving back and always supported all the local charities with funds and merchandise; and
WHEREAS, Edward is having his 100th Birthday on Sunday, September 10, 2023, with his devoted family and many new and old friends and is being celebrated as a special, loving soul.
NOW, THEREFORE, l, Fred Camillo, FIRST SELECTMAN OF THE TOWN OF GREENWICH, do
hereby proclaim September 10, 2023 as
Edward Schachter Day
in the Town of Greenwich and urge all citizens to join me in wishing Edward a very happy 100th birthday. Congratulations and best wishes.
