Greenwich, CT, May 22, 2023 – Today Governor Ned Lamont announced a $270,400 state grant awarded to the Town of Greenwich Department of Public Works, in partnership with the City of Stamford, to plan and design a new multi-use recreational trail for pedestrians and bicyclists. The multi-use path would connect Binney Park in Old Greenwich and Boccuzzi Park in southwest Stamford. The two municipalities will receive planning and design funding through the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s (CTDEEP) Connecticut Recreational Trails Program.
The proposed path predominantly follows the official East Coast Greenway (ECG) alignment except for a short connection to Binney Park north of West End Avenue. The Town of Greenwich Department of Public Works intends to look at connecting to Binney Park either via Sound Beach Avenue or West End Ave / Arch Street. The ECG through this area has some sidewalks but it does not currently have any protected bicycle facilities, despite some of the highest bicycle ridership in Town. The Greenwich / Stamford multi-use path study grant is one of 50 that received funding from the Connecticut Recreational Trails Program. In total, $9 million in state grants are being released.
Town of Greenwich Department of Public Works Deputy Commissioner, Jim Michel, stated, “We are thrilled to have Governor Lamont here today to discuss and support us by providing us with funds to plan and design a valuable multi-use path that is a recreation and transportation resource between two landmarks. Our goal is to make transportation safe and accessible for users of all ages and abilities.”
The town of Greenwich Department of Public Works is currently coordinating with the City of Stamford on the next steps and awaiting further guidance from CTDEEP to get this project moving forward.
