PROCLAMATION from Fred Camillo, First Selectman
WHEREAS, Sexual Assault Awareness Month calls attention to the fact that sexual violence is widespread and impacts every person; and
WHEREAS, Sexual Assault Awareness Month aims to raise public awareness about sexual violence and educate communities about how to prevent it; and
WHEREAS, Systems of oppression such as racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, ageism, ableism and more contribute to higher rates of sexual harassment, assault and abuse; and
WHEREAS, More than 1 in 4 non-Hispanic Black women in the United States were raped in their lifetime, more than 4 in 5 American Indian and Alaskan Native women have experienced violence in their lifetime, 1 in 3 Hispanic women reported unwanted sexual conduct in their lifetime, 32.9 percent of adults with intellectual disabilities have experienced sexual violence and 47 percent of all transgender people have been sexually assaulted at some point in their lives; and
WHEREAS, We recognize it will take ending all forms of oppression to end sexual violence worldwide and the theme for 2023’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month is Drawing Connections: Prevention Demands Equity.
NOW, THEREFORE, l, FRED CAMILLO, FIRST SELECTMAN OF THE TOWN OF GREENWICH, do
hereby proclaim April 2023 as
Sexual Assault Awareness Month
In the Town of Greenwich and encourage all our citizens, organizations and institutions in Town to build equity and respect within our community and workplaces and take action to prevent sexual violence.
