PROCLAMATION from Fred Camillo, First Selectman
WHEREAS, The Greenwich High School Boys Varsity Soccer Team competed in, and won the 2022 CIAC LL Championship Final vs. William Hall on Saturday, November 19th, at the Hartford Athletic Stadium in Hartford, CT at 6:30 p.m.; and
WHEREAS, This was Greenwich High School’s fifth appearance in the Boys Soccer State Championship, which it hadn’t won since 1961, roughly 61 years ago; and
WHEREAS, Kurt Putnam in his 22nd season as Head Coach and Ray Marschall in his 14th season as Assistant Head Coach led their team to win the 2022 Boys Soccer State Championship, having previously finished runners-up in the 2019 final; and
WHEREAS, Greenwich Boys Varsity Soccer began their journey to a state championship with victories over 2021 State Champion, Farmington High School (on penalty kicks), #1 seed Trumbull High School (on penalty kicks), #9 seed Newington High School and then #13 seed Fairfield Prep High School (on penalty kicks) in the semi-final; they entered the tournament as the 16th seeded team with a season record of 9-5-2; and
WHEREAS, All players, led by four senior captains in Lucas Luzuriaga, Nicholas Carvalho, Gordon Cartwright, and Jamie Smith, demonstrated considerable character, commitment, and courage to overcome the "underdog status" to reach the state final and to win it on their fourth penalty shootout. The boys demonstrated immense grit, determination, and sacrifice for the task at hand, epitomizing Cardinal Core Values with a never-quit attitude; and
WHEREAS, Family members, teammates, coaching staff, and school administration are here today to celebrate the unbelievable achievement and Cinderella story of the boys winning the State Championship.
NOW, THEREFORE, l, FRED CAMILLO, FIRST SELECTMAN OF THE TOWN OF GREENWICH, do
hereby proclaim December 8, 2022 as
Greenwich High School Varsity Boys Soccer Day
in the Town of Greenwich and urge all residents to join me in in congratulating the team on an incredible season and by celebrating this day in their honor.
