Town of Greenwich Department of Public Works will begin the annual Leaf Collection Program on November 7, 2022, to half-acre or less residential properties (building zone R-20) on public streets. The Leaf Collection Program is conducted for a 6 to 8-week period from November to mid-December and weather permitting the Town will provide two collections per numeric section. The collection takes place Monday to Saturday and there is no collection on Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, or the day after Thanksgiving. Timing and schedule for leaf pickup may be adjusted and subject to change due to unforeseen events, including adverse weather conditions. 

On average, the Town removes more than 30,000 cubic yards of leaves each year. Residents can find out when their street is scheduled through the 24-hour leaf collection hotline at 203-618-7698 or by visiting www.greenwichct.gov/257/Leaf-Collection. 

Greenwich Residents Applicable for the Leaf Collection Program are Advised of the Following:

• Rake leaves into piles at the shoulder, off the pavement of the road. 
• Do not rake onto the pavement, sidewalks, catch basin grates, and open channels.
• Leaves only – no branches, sticks, or garden refuse.
• To help keep leaves under control it is recommended that leaves are placed in biodegradable bags. Plastic bags with leaves will not be collected.  
• As per the State of Connecticut, General Statutes, Chapter 368m, Sec. 19a-335, Nuisances on Highways, residents must remove all residual leaf piles after the second leaf collection. 
• Rake early and frequently to be prepared for leaf pickup. 
• Residents are encouraged to mulch their leaves and leave them in place. Mulching leaves can improve lawns and reduce the environmental footprint associated with the collection, hauling, and composting elsewhere. More information on this approach:  http://www.leleny.org/p/homeowners.html.

• Can I mulch or compost my leaves? – Yes, you can successfully handle leaves on your own parcel in many cases.  Link to this website to learn more about how to do this successfully:  http://www.leleny.org/p/homeowners.html. You can talk to neighbors, garden clubs, and other landscaping resources about how to use leaves in several garden applications that will help reduce the environmental footprint of the Town’s leaf collection program.
• Can I bag my leaves? – Yes, you can put your leaves in biodegradable paper bags.  This can keep leaves from blowing around on windy days and keep them out of drainage structures.
• Where are leaves collected? – Public leaf collection is provided to properties only on public streets in building zones R-20 (half-acre) and below.
• When are leaves collected? – Typically, during a 6-8-week period from mid-November to mid-December, depending on leaf fall, weather conditions, and possible storm impacts.
• Where should the leaves be put? – In areas of public collection, leaves are to be raked into piles at the shoulder of the road, off the pavement.  Avoid raking leaves onto pavement, sidewalks, catch basin grates, and open channels.  Leaves can cause these drainage structures to flood during rainy periods – help us keep leaves out of our stormwater system!
• What can’t be collected? – Sticks, branches, and garden refuse will not be collected.  Plastic bags are not accepted – bags must be biodegradable.
