SEPT 9: Community Connections from Fred

Town Website Home Page

Town of Greenwich website: www.greenwichct.gov on Sept 9, 2022

Greetings friends and neighbors:

This week, I’d like to remind residents that there are many ways to stay informed and get reminders about board, commission and committee meetings as well as other interesting topics that are not found in my weekly eblast. The Town website has a convenient, “Notify Me” feature to receive email alerts whenever updates are made to the site. You may also visit the greenwichct.gov home page and Town calendar any time for current promotions and events. In addition, The Greenwich Community Television (GCTV) Committee maintains a YouTube channel where meetings are live-streamed and then posted for on-demand viewing. I hope you take advantage of these services to stay connected with everything happening at Town Hall.

September 11 Ceremonies

Sunday, September 11 marks the 21st anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York, and we have an opportunity to remember the 22 victims with ties to Greenwich. A morning service takes place at the Cos Cob Memorial Park promptly at 8:46 a.m., and the Glenville Volunteer Fire Company gathers for their commemoration at 6:00 p.m. with the ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Read more:  https://www.greenwichct.gov/1958/September-11-ceremonies

2022 PHOTO CONTEST WINNERS-FBParks & Rec Photo Contest

Congratulations to the winders of the summer photo contest and thanks to all who participated. There were so many great entries, it was hard to choose just three. First place went to Andrew Cummings for “Binney Park,” second place for “Today’s Point Winter Sky” went to Julien Jarry, and James Gordon took third place for “The Pomerance Palette.”

Join the Young Artists Philharmonic (POSTER)

Auditions are scheduled for September 11th and 18th at the Greenwich Arts Council on Greenwich Avenue. For 60 years, the Young Artists Philharmonic has provided young musicians with world-class musical training and includes three orchestras for all ages and abilities. Take your talent to the next level and register online at www.youngartistsphil.org

Westchester Airport Forum (IMAGE)

Join your neighbors on September 13th for an open conversation about the Airport Master Plan with Westchester County representatives. The airport has served the local community since 1945, and the forum is an opportunity for the Greenwich community to ask questions and provide vital feedback to ensure that the facility remains a good neighbor while planning for the future. Harvest Time Church will host the program at 1338 King Street, Greenwich at 7:00 p.m. Read about the master plan and bring your questions and comments: https://hpnmasterplan.com/

Neighbor to Neighbor’s new pantry opens

The food pantry at the new Cohen Center at Neighbor to Neighbor opened on August 29, 2022 to continue serving the community from their new building on the campus of Christ Church in central Greenwich. Join me for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 13 at 2:00 p.m. The mission of Neighbor to Neighbor is to improve the lives of residents in need throughout the Greenwich area and strengthen the community by creating access to food, clothing, and basic living essentials in an atmosphere of kindness and respect. Neighbor to Neighbor conducts weekly food drives throughout Town with convenient locations in backcountry, Riverside, and Cos Cob. To find out how you can help, visit https://www.ntngreenwich.org/ for more information.

International Coastal Cleanup Day

Marine debris, particularly plastics, affects the beauty of the shorelines as well as our wildlife and food supply. Greenwich Green & Clean is sponsoring a cleanup day at Greenwich Point Park from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17. Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves and buckets from home, but will also be available at the site. All non-biodegradable trash collected is reported to Save the Sound and the Ocean Conservancy to analyze ocean pollution. Registration is recommended, and a Community Service Certificate will be issued. Find out more here.

Dancing Stars of Greenwich for Abilis

The fourth annual charity dance-off is hosted by the Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Greenwich at the Tamarack Country Club on September 17. The fundraiser features celebrity judges Brendan Fraser, Lara Spencer and Billy Blanks, Jr. with Ali Wentworth as Master of Ceremonies. Local dancers are sponsored by donations to benefit Abilis of Greenwich. Visit greenwichdancingstars.com to find out more.

dog of the week Dog of the Week

Meet dainty miss Janeiro, a 9-month-old Beagle mix who loves to play! She’d make a wonderful playmate for a family with kids and adults who are looking for an energetic pup to walk and hike with. Janeiro would even love someone to foster her while she waits for her forever family. Could that be you? Find out more:

Weekend meals to fight childhood hunger

Filling in the Blanks fights childhood hunger by providing weekend meals to children in need who qualify for the free or reduced school meal programs. The free meals include healthy, easy-to-prepare food items for children and are now available to Greenwich school children. To register your child, click here and select the school your child is attending during the 2022-2023 school year.  Food will be distributed to your child at school on Fridays.  If you do not see your child's school listed, please contact operations@fillingintheblanks.org for more information.

Political Signs on Public Property

As we get closer to November, I’d like to remind everyone about our 20-year tradition regarding political signs on public property. The agreement has been to pace signs on Public property starting two weeks out from election day and then take them down the next day. As for private property, as long as it's your own, you can place signs without any time restrictions.

COVID Update

Greenwich Hospital reported that they are caring for 8 COVID-positive patients today with none of those in the ICU.  System-wide, they are caring for 128.. For information about vaccines, just log onto the Yale New Haven Health website to find a vaccine site. Family Centers also offers weekly vaccine and testing at Wilbur Peck Court, and the Connecticut Department of Health provides public mobile vaccine clinics.
