[ARCHIVED] May 1-7 Greenwich Ride-A-Bike-Week

For Immediate Release

GREENWICH, CT – First Selectman Fred Camillo has proclaimed the week of May 1-7, 2022 Ride a Bike Week in Greenwich, to raise awareness about the convenience, fun and health benefits of two-wheeled transportation and recreation.

“Greenwich Ride-a-Bike Week is an excellent outlet for our residents to join in a fun exercise that serves many purposes. Not only is cycling an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to motorized transportation, it also is one that promotes a healthy lifestyle,” First Selectman Fred Camillo said.

He added, “I am proud of the ongoing efforts to ensure that Greenwich is a bike-friendly community. These efforts will allow more residents to enjoy our beautiful natural resources from our beaches to the backcountry.”

May is National Bike Month, so the First Selectman’s Bicycle Task Force (BTF) proposed the Greenwich proclamation to encourage cycling in town as an alternative to driving to work, school, parks, the grocery or the train.

“The pandemic has seen a sharp increase in the numbers of people taking to our local roads on bikes, scooters and the like,” said BTF Co-Head Vince DiMarco. “It’s a credit to our First Selectman that he is recognizing the value in developing more complete streets and infrastructure for all these forms of micromobility.”

The cycling advocacy group, Pedal Greenwich, welcomed the proclamation. “Recently local agencies have expressed concern about health and wellness particularly among teens,” said Pedal Greenwich organizer Anthony Moor. “Bicycling is a wonderful way to give teens a sense of independence, get them out of the house and promote recreation and fitness.”

BTF members suggested ways to commemorate Bike Week in Greenwich:

  • May 1: This is National Ride a Bike Day. Attend the Greenwich Cycle Safety Academy, for first graders through high school, hosted by the Greenwich Police Department, the Junior League and Pedal Greenwich at the Boys & Girls Club.
  • May 4: Bike to school! This is National Bike and Roll to School Day.
  • Bike to work in preparation for National Bike to Work Week starting May 16.
  • Bike to the grocery store or your shopping district.
  • Bicycle for fun. Pick a park and wend your way there with the family.

Win a prize:

  • Send in a biking photo and win a prize in one of the following categories: a) best family (recreational) picture, b) best bike-or-roll-to-school shot and c) best bike-to-work photo. Find details here
