Greetings Greenwich friends and neighbors.

“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.”   — Unknown

I open with this quote this week as it is National Volunteer Week. The week is dedicated to recognize the collective good work done every day by volunteers across the globe was established in 1974.

Our Town is blessed to have the hundreds of volunteers who donate thousands of hours each year to help ensure our Town has effective leadership and goodwill. And then we have the hundreds of organizations ranging from neighborhoods, nursing homes and garden clubs to service organizations, our libraries and hospital.

The spirit of volunteerism is most certainly alive and well in Greenwich. We are blessed to have so many of you taking the time from your busy lives to give back to the community. That is what makes Greenwich such an enviable place to live, work and raise a family.

I thank you all for what you do each day.

Walking to beat childhood cancers

I’m looking forwarding to joining the Pediatric Cancer Foundation that is hosting their biggest fundraising event of the year, PCF Walks!. The walk is scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow, April 24, at King Street campus of Brunswick School. About 1,000 walkers are expected with the goal of raising $500,000 for the fight against children’s cancer.

The foundation will be honoring Katie Kennedy, a Greenwich Academy second-grader who kicked cancer in 2020. For more information and to register, please use this link.

COVID Update

As of today, Greenwich Hospital was treating 7 COVID-19 patients. The Yale-New Haven Health system has a total of 66 patients. With our public schools on spring break this week, updated numbers are not available.

As of April 22, the total number of resident COVID cases (since the pandemic began in March 2020) increased to 12,516. The number of residents whose deaths have been attributed to COVID has risen by 1 at 122.

The Greenwich Health Department expects to announce additional vaccine booster clinics next week. Be sure to check our website to receive the latest news.

Vaccine info

Log onto the Yale New Haven Health website to find a booster vaccine site.

Family Centers is offering weekday vaccine and testing clinics at 111 Wilbur Peck Court. Details can be found here.

The Connecticut Department of Public Health is offering mobile vaccine clinics. Information on locations can be found here.

Local zoning discussion

I am looking forward to The Friends of the Cos Cob Library’s 19th Annual Cos Cob Town Meeting: The Current State of Local Zoning” at 7 p.m. Monday, April 25.

Joining me in the discussion, which will be moderated by Greenwich Sentinel President Peter Barhydt, are state Sen. Ryan Fazio, state Reps. Harry Arora, Kimberly Fiorello and Steve Meskers, Greenwich Communities Board Chair Sam Romeo and Peter Berg, the chair of the RTM Land Use Committee.

The event is virtual and attendees will receive the Zoom webinar link when you register by using this link.

Lock it or lose it

A reminder that car thieves haven’t taken a pandemic pause. Please be sure to take your vehicle keys or key fob and lock your vehicle, especially in your driveway.

The trend of stealing cars from our Town residents continues. On Tuesday, two cars were stolen and five suspects were arrested in connection with the attempted mid-morning theft of a sports car from a mid-country driveway on Wednesday. More details on these incidents can be found here.

***

I hope that you will join me in supporting American Legion Post 29 on Sunday. Members will be holding a pancake breakfast starting at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at the Legion’s post.

And if you see Old Greenwich resident Josie Munro, wish her a happy birthday – she is celebrating her 100th birthday on Monday, April 25.

***

Stay safe and wishing you the best,

Fred
