[ARCHIVED] April 1: Community Connections from Fred

basset hounds at the beach

Greetings Greenwich friends and neighbors.

Our Department of Public Works has marked the successful completion of a complex multi-year project that began back in 2011 – the replacement of almost all the Old Greenwich Common Force Main.

This critical infrastructure runs from Old Greenwich, through Riverside, under the Mianus River, through Strickland and Sound Shore roads, along the railroad track between I-95 and the tracks themselves, and the western portion of Bruce Park through to Davis Avenue.

It’s more than 3 miles long and approximately 85% has been replaced and/or rehabilitated.  This pipeline conveys wastewater from a large area encompassing Old Greenwich, Riverside and Cos Cob. The last section to be replaced went into service on March 22.

Because these lines are underground, they are often overlooked by the public. We thank the team of Sewer Division staff, our consultant team, and contractors who have helped make this project a success.

A pause for paws at The Point

It’s April Fool’s Day today. But sadly, this isn’t a joke … beginning today, dogs (or any animal) are no longer allowed at Greenwich Point Park. The only exception is a certified service animal.

I know that I will certainly miss taking my dogs Teddy Roosevelt and Reagan to the beach. But I am thankful that we have so many other parks and trails to visit for a good workout.

COVID Update

As of today, Greenwich Hospital was treating 2 COVID-19 patients. The Yale-New Haven Health system has a total of 42 patients. Both numbers are double over last week. Our public schools reported 29 active cases today - 22 students, 4 teachers, 2 service providers and 1 administrator. So far this school year, there have been 2,300 COVID cases recorded by the school district.

As of March 29, the total number of resident COVID cases among Town residents (since the pandemic began in March 2020) increased to 11,706. The number of residents whose deaths have been attributed to COVID increased by 1 to 121.

As of March 29, 83.70% of the eligible 58,952 residents are fully vaccinated.
