[ARCHIVED] Nov 19: Community Connections from Fred

Greenwich Knights of Columbus Coats for Kids Poster

The Knights of Columbus have partnered with the Boy Scouts, the Boys & Girls Club Greenwich and the Greenwich Police Department for a coat giveaway next weekend.

Greetings Greenwich friends and neighbors.

In less than a week, we will celebrate Thanksgiving. This year has presented its challenges as we continued to cope with the deadly COVID-19 pandemic and faced the fury of Mother Nature with unprecedented weather events.

I believe that these events have demonstrated the resiliency of our residents, have deepened our bonds with friends and neighbors by helping one another, and provided us with opportunities to build an even stronger community. As we give thanks for what we have, I look forward to working with you to see what our future holds.

As President John F. Kennedy once said, “We must find time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives.” Each of us makes a difference in our lives – and for that I thank you.

FEMA disaster recovery center open

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) opened its Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) at the Glenville Fire Station, 266 Glenville Road, earlier this week.

Representatives from FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration are available at the center to help survivors apply for disaster assistance, explain disaster assistance programs, answer questions about FEMA letters and the appeals process and provide literature about repairs and rebuilding to make homes more disaster resistant.

Survivors are encouraged to file insurance claims for damage to their homes, personal property, businesses and vehicles before they apply for FEMA assistance.

Applicants for disaster assistance should have the following information prior to registration: Social Security number; address of the damaged primary residence; insurance coverage information; current telephone number and mailing address; and bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit of funds.

The hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays.

In addition to visiting a DRC, Connecticut residents can apply online at DisasterAssistance.gov; via the FEMA app; or by calling the Disaster Assistance helpline at 800-621-3362 (TTY: 800-462-7585). The toll-free telephone lines operate from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week. If you use a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or others, give FEMA the number for that service.

Here is a link with information on how the application process works.  For information on the Individuals and Households assistance programs which provide financial help or direct services to people with needs that aren’t met through other means, please use this link.

Here is the link to frequently asked questions. To help provide as much information as possible, please take the time to review this Disaster Resource and Recovery Guide.
