Route 1 is one of many flooded and blocked roads that caused school and other closures throughout Greenwich on September 2, 2021.
Greetings Greenwich friends and neighbors.
This week saw the start of school and a historic rain event in Greenwich. I would like to take this moment to salute the efforts of our Department of Public Works, Parks & Recreation Department, Greenwich Fire Department, Greenwich Police Department, Greenwich Emergency Medical Services, Fleet Department, Transportation Association of Greenwich, and all volunteer units for answering the call through the night and all day on Thursday. The crews continue their efforts as of this writing. We are grateful for their service and dedication to our community and to public safety.
The remnants of Hurricane Ida passing through our area on Wednesday night left about eight inches of rain within a nine-hour period of time resulting in flooding in many neighborhoods, in addition to many downed trees and power lines. Public safety and utility crews continue to assess the damage and prioritize repair efforts. We had no reports of significant injuries, despite evacuations of cars and homes caught in floodwaters and the evacuation of one assisted care facility in town. A large dock in the Byram River broke loose during the storm resulting in significant damage to boats. Assistance to those in need is being provided by Town of Greenwich workers and private community agencies. Just over 500 homes in Greenwich are currently without power. Eversource crews are in the area attempting to restore power. Read more in yesterday's Newsflash from Police Captain Mark Zuccerella:

Davis Avenue Bridge Officially Opens
This past Tuesday (8/31) the Davis Avenue Bridge officially reopened on schedule right before the new school year for Greenwich Public Schools! It is anticipated that there will be another closure for a few brief days this September in order to install the waterproof membrane, a necessary element of all new bridges. Town of Greenwich Department of Public Works will announce these road closure dates in the near future. The Davis Avenue Bridge is projected to be completely finished by Spring of 2022. Project completion is dependent on weather and any unforeseen complications. To learn more about this project, please click HERE.
