AVID graduation
Congratulations to the 40 members of the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Class of 2021.
Selectwoman Lauren Rabin and myself were happy to help celebrate the accomplishments of the class along with their friends, family, teachers, administrators and mentors at their year-end graduation party at Greenwich High School. To mark the occasion, I issued a proclamation and designated June 16 as AVID Day.
As part of AVID SUCCESS, students received a gift card to their college bookstore, a huge box of dorm supplies generously donated by OCM, AVID swag, Members Credit Union cups, and academic awards and accolades from their AVID teachers, Ken Alcorn and Frank Kovac. Nearly 100% of the graduates will be entering college in the fall with one student joining the United States Marine Corps.
The Greenwich Alliance for Education funded the implementation of AVID at GHS in 2008 and later the expansion to Central and Western Middle schools. Since then, several hundred students have graduated from the AVID program. AVID is an internationally recognized college-readiness system designed to close the achievement gap and promote equity and access in education.
Congratulations to the AVID grads and to the students who will be participating in the Greenwich High School graduation ceremony on Monday evening.
Friends of Greenwich Point
Please mark your calendars … the Friends of Greenwich Point and the Department of Parks & Recreation will host a mile-a-minute vine cleanup of the Holly Grove at Greenwich Point on June 26. The group and volunteers will meet at the grove from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., rain or shine. Long clothes and gloves are required. Participants must bring their own water supply.
New Holly Hill Facility Entrance Permit Required
It’s time for residents to purchase the new Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility entrance permits.
Starting on July 1, all residents will need to prominently display the new permit in order to enter the Holly Hill Facility. For a $25 fee, residential permit holders can take advantage of disposing all accepted materials – including municipal solid waste (MSW), recycling, organic waste and bulky waste – at the Holly Hill Resource Recovery facility for the entire year.
To align with the Town of Greenwich’s fiscal year, the permit can be used between July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022. The fastest way to apply for a permit is online and can be found on the Public Works section of the greenwichct.gov website.
To help staff and ensure the traffic will flow more smoothly, residents should show their permit by hanging the tag on the rearview mirror of their vehicle. The proceeds from the permit fees help defray the Town’s costs to dispose of all of the materials dumped at the recovery center. Every little bit helps the environment -- take advantage of the food scrap recycling program, as well as other recycling opportunities at the facility.
The Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility, 4 Holly Hill Lane, is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and from 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday. For more information, click HERE.
