Community Newsletter from Fred Camillo, June 11: Honoring John Margenot

John Margenot and FredHonoring former First Selectman John Margenot.

Greetings Greenwich friends and neighbors.

Community service and volunteerism are two of the greatest aspects of living here in Greenwich.

And I cannot think of anyone who epitomizes service and volunteerism more than our former First Selectman John Margenot. After decades of services on the Board of Estimate and taxation, the Representative Town Meeting and the Board of Selectmen, John has graciously served on our Board of Ethics.

John attended his last Board meeting this week, capping nine years of service. While his service will be forever commemorated with the John Margenot Atrium in the Greenwich Public Safety Complex, I was happy to present him with a Certificate of Special Recognition as a token of thanks for his Board of Ethics service.

COVID-19 update

The good news is that it appears that we are winding down the COVID pandemic. As of today, 65.84 percent of all eligible residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine including 93.54 percent of our senior citizens age 65 and older are fully vaccinated.

As of today, there are 3 active cases, which is 12 less than a week ago. There have been a total of 5,121 residents diagnosed since the COVID outbreak began. The number of residents who have passed away due to COVID remains at 89.

Today, Greenwich Hospital doesn’t have any patients being treated for COVID and there are a total of 20 patients being treated in the five Yale-New Haven Health System hospitals. And Greenwich Public Schools reports there aren’t any cases involving students or staff.

Vaccine and testing information:

For homebound residents, the Family Health Division of the Health Department can provide assistance. Residents need to contact their physician to request that a doctor’s order for a vaccine shot is forwarded to the Health Department. Doctors can contact the Family Health Division by calling 203-622-6495.

1st anniversary of food scrap recycling

It’s hard to believe that it was nearly a year ago on June 15th that the Town, Waste Free Greenwich and the Greenwich Recycling Advisory Board (GRAB) launched our first-ever food scrap recycling program.

It is truly amazing that residents contribute approximately three-quarters of a ton of food scraps each week, and since July, just more than 34 tons of food scraps have been diverted from the waste stream.

In our never ending drive to make Greenwich a waste free community, the one-year anniversary of our food scraps program is both a celebration of progress and a reminder that our work continues. I salute Waste Free Greenwich and all our other environmental advocates for a very successful 12 months and look forward to even bigger and better things in the near future.

The food scrap recycling program is voluntary and free to all Greenwich households. Residents collect food scraps at home in accordance with the program guidelines (which can be found here) and can bring them to the drop-off shed next to the trash building at Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility during hours of operation.

An additional collection point is now available at the Old Greenwich Farmer’s Market during designated hours on Wednesday afternoons only. The material is carted to a commercial facility to be processed into nutrient-rich compost, which Waste Free Greenwich distributed to residents during its compost giveback day in March.

More information about the program and how to start food recycling, please use this link or email wastefreegreenwich@gmail.com

Celebrating Arts Day 2021

Arts Day 2021 was wildly successful at the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich last week.  The event, organized by The Developing Artist, gave students the opportunity to draw, paint, sculpt, hammer and tinker in a collaborative outdoor work area.

The Developing Artist program, captures the imagination of students and helps them see themselves as artists, innovators and creators. It’s a year-round program led by Michael Manning and Ben Quesnel at the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich, Eastern Middle School, Western Middle School and Central Middle School. It’s made possible by a Reaching Out Grant from the Greenwich Alliance for Education.

The Greenwich Alliance for Education was launched in 2006 as the local education foundation supporting students in the Greenwich Public Schools. Since its founding, the Alliance has dedicated $3.0 million to funding innovation, expanding opportunities and inspiring educators.

For more information about the Developing Artist program, please click here. For more information about the Alliance for Education, please click here.

Congratulations!

If you should see Greenwich Firefighter Nathaniel Schulde, please congratulate him on his promotion to Lieutenant. I was pleased to preside over his promotion ceremony today at Central Station where we also re-enacted the swearing-in ceremony for firefighters Anthony Ryan, Roger Clapp and John Valentini, whose swearing in ceremony last December was done via Zoom.

Stay safe and all the best,

Fred
