Greenwich announces decision on school resource officer assignments

GREENWICH, CT - Town of Greenwich First Selectman and Police Commissioner Peter J. Tesei announced on Friday that beginning with the start of the 2018-19 school year the Greenwich Police Department will assign a second School Resource Officer (SRO) at Greenwich High School.

This decision was made in consultation and collaboration with Interim Greenwich Public Schools Superintendent Ralph Mayo and the Greenwich Board of Education.

Greenwich Police have had a highly effective SRO program within Greenwich High School (GHS) for more than 10 years. By adding a second SRO, police, school and town officials expect there will be an increase of the positive outcomes that were previously achieved. More importantly, this assignment will address growing concerns about school safety and security within the community – concerns that exist across the nation.

The goals of the Greenwich SRO program include maintaining a safe learning environment, provide valuable resources to school staff and students, foster positive relationships with youth, assist in developing strategies to resolve problems affecting youth and to protect the school community.

Greenwich SROs provide this in three key roles: as an educator (ie: guest lecturer), an informal counselor/mentor and a law enforcement officer. Greenwich SROs are trained and certified through the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) program.
