Rabies Testing

The State of Connecticut Department of Public Health Laboratory in Rocky Hill is restricting the number of animal carcasses they will accept for rabies testing. Because of this, the Greenwich Department of Health Laboratory will now accept only the following specimens for testing:

  • Rabies-prone animals (e.g., raccoons and skunks) that have actually bitten or scratched a person
  • Bats that were caught flying in a home

Domestic Animal Exposure Incidents Not Accepted

Animals involved in domestic animal exposure incidents will not be accepted. If a resident wants such an animal tested, they may submit it to the Connecticut Diagnostic Veterinary Laboratory (CDVL) at UCONN in Storrs; the Greenwich Department of Health Laboratory will not accept these specimens. The resident is responsible for bringing the animal to CDVL themselves, and a fee will be charged for testing. The contact information is:
