Fleet

The Fleet Department is an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certified Blue Seal Facility responsible for providing quality and professional Fleet Management to Town departments.

Fleet Trucks

The Fleet Department operates the Vehicle Maintenance Center, which was opened on November 2, 1989. It is a state-of-the-art centralized facility where the Town's fleet of vehicles are maintained and repaired.

Vehicles & Equipment

These vehicles and equipment are assigned to the following Town departments:

  • Board of Education
  • Fire
  • General Government
  • Health
  • Human Services
  • Library
  • Nathaniel Witherell
  • Parks and Recreation
  • Police
  • Public Works

Responsibilities

The Fleet Department has developed a comprehensive Preventative Maintenance Program, ensuring that the Town's vehicles and equipment are reliable, safe, and suited for their job function. The Fleet Department's responsibilities also include providing technical specifications and vehicle and equipment replacement decisions. Town departments are kept current on rules, regulations and technology affecting the Town's Fleet.

In 2012, the Fleet Management information system that was in place, was replaced with a technologically advanced system, AssetWorks, to meet the complex, growing needs of the Fleet Department. AssetWorks better enables the staff to assimilate and process vehicle repair history, parts inventory, and the preventive maintenance program.

Fuel Responsibilities

The Fleet Department is also responsible for the town's fuel sites and monitors fuel usage through an automated fuel system, E J. Ward Systems. Since November 1999, the operation of the parts room function has been outsourced, allowing the staff and technicians to focus on its core functions.

Implementation of a Total Quality Management Program

Implementation of a Total Quality Management (TQM) program helps ensure that the Town departments' needs are being met. In addition, user meetings are held to prepare for the winter months and to review performance.
